Nellie’s Sweet Shoppe was started by Harley and Jackie Morlock along with their daughter Ronna Mack in late 2007. The store is dedicated to the memory of their daughter/sister Janelle (aka Nellie) Morlock Tebbs who lost her fight against malignant melanoma on January 13th, 2007.
Prior to Janelle’s passing Harley, Jackie and Ronna and her family relocated to Smithville to spend quality time with Janelle and her husband, Tracy, and their daughter, Blake. Harley and Jackie moved from Minnesota to Smithville, and Ronna from southern Johnson County, Kansas.
In August 2007, Ronna and her parents had lunch in downtown Smithville. It was then that they noticed the vacancy of a quaint red-and-white storefront on Main Street. Jackie stated "That cute store looks like it should be a candy store". Five weeks later, on October 8th, 2007, Nellie’s Sweet Shoppe was open for business.
In preparation for the store opening, deciding which products to carry, what equipment the store would need, they each witnessed daily miracles which made the purpose of the store that much more fulfilling.
Today, Nellie's is known for their delicious handmade fudge. Harley prepares each batch of fudge with a great deal of care. He estimates that he's made over 9 tons of fudge. The delicious flavors include chocolate, chocolate walnut, chocolate peanut butter, Snickers, maple, mint, and seasonal flavors like amaretto, Irish cream, creme brûlée, root beer, peppermint stick, eggnog, pumpkin pie, dark chocolate sea salt and cappuccino, and many more.
Nellie's is a throwback to the old time candy store of days gone by, complete with “Remember When” candies and treats. They carry a wide selection of delectables including salt water taffy, English toffee, dipped pretzels, chocolates, and truffles. Seasonal specials include caramel corn, chocolate dipped strawberries, cookies, and caramel apples.
For those hot summer nights, Nellie's serves up hand-dipped Kansas City's own Belefonte Ice Cream in a variety of flavors and your choice of a cup or a cone. Or you can get an old-fashioned shake or malt.
For parties and holidays, Nellie's offers custom gifts, bulk orders and 'fudge of the month' club.

Nellie had a wonderful motto found in the signature of her emails,“Take time to enjoy each day.” This motto is written above the front door at Nellie’s as a reminder of the sweet influence that she had on those who knew her.
